Basketball Tournament
As I have mentioned in class, it is up to you to organize transportation to Thursday's basketball tournament. The girls tournament is at ACG, and the boy's will be at SSIS. Try to get the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade involved! The best way to go about this is to have a number of cars / taxi's here at school at 320pm, ready to take you to whichever tournament that you wish to go.

Homework over the Weekend
In addition to going outside to play this weekend and doing the Physical Map of the United States (which is due on Tuesday, NOT Monday. You will have to answer the following questions about the videos, on the class Wiki.
Provide a summary of the videos:
Describe any type of economic activity that is taking place in the videos:
In the videos, did you see any conflict? If so, what was it and why did it occur? If not, can you predict any that is coming?
I have set up space on the Wiki to answer these questions under the North America page. If you have any questions about the assignment, please us the discussion board first, then Edmodo. If you are still unable to resolve an issue, email me.

How to Embedit!!!
OK 8th grade, you will now learn how to embed a word document or PDF into your blog. As I mention in class and it is written on the instructions I passed out to you, I want you to turn in a 'hard copy' of the letter to me, and embed the word document on your blog. Here are the steps to embed it:
- Go to http://embedit.in/
- Go to "Select Files" and click on that
- From your documents, choose the file name that your letter is saved under.
- The screen shown below should automatically open once you have double clicked on your file name:
- Copy the "Embed Code"
- Go to your blog and click on "New Post"
- Click on "Edit HTML" - This is in the top right hand corner of the area that you add your content to your blog.
- Paste the embed code that you copied from embedit.in into this area.
- Now click "preview" at the bottom of the text box to make sure that your document got embeded into your blog.

Homework for Nov 8th
Here is your assignment for tonight:
I would like you to draw a map of the school and its surrounding area (no more than 2km).
The map does not need to be accurate—in fact, a 2-dimensional map of Earth’s curved surface will never be accurate. Your maps should show relative spatial relationships rather than exact distances. For example, a post office that is four blocks away from the school should be farther away from the school on the map than a park that is two blocks away.
On the map you should clearly label things that are important to you and/or that they think are important to the community.
Do NOT color this map. Draw this map on A4 paper.
Be ready to explain tomorrow -
What you think should be included in a sustainable community?
How sustainable do you consider the community surrounding our school?
Use the map below to help you draw your map. Remember, this map does not have to be to scale. I don't want you to spend over an hour on this tonight!
Stay tuned for a summary of the information that we came up with today in class...

Homework for Tuesday, November 2nd
Sorry for getting this up so late in the evening. I have had to deal with some personal issues.
Please find the questions below. You will answer these questions on your own blog.
How does advertising influence consumption?
Do you think citizens are sufficiently informed about the sustainability of our consumption habits? If not, how can we become more informed about sustainability issues?
Do you think these advertising techniques influence what you and your friends purchase?
These questions should be answered and posted on your blog by the time that you walk into class tomorrow. Remember, you will NOT have time in class tomorrow to work on your ads. Those must be completed by the time you get to class. You can use props and costumes if you like, but are not required to.
For all you gamers out there, check out this video:

Homework for Oct 27th, 2010
For the homework tonight, I want you to watch the 'sustainability cartoon' below and read the article posted.
Come into class tomorrow with some questions that you have about the article. Remember to have your "Active Reading Voice" turned on when you go through this article. Don't allow your "Passive Reading Voice" to take over, so when you get to the end of the article you have no idea as to what you have read.
Print the article if you can, and bring it to class.
On a separate sheet of paper, answer the four questions at the end of the article. Make sure your name is on this, as you will be turning it in tomorrow.
Also, post the examples of 'sustainable development' that you found earlier in the week on your blog (periods 1 and 2, I did not mention this in class, but you are still responsible for doing this).

Weekend Update
Hello Everyone,
I hope that you are all enjoying your weekend. Your homework for over the weekend, as mentioned in class on Friday, is to post a comment on three different people’s blogs. You are only allowed to post comments on people from your own period. Remember, we are still in the process of getting to know one and other. We are creating a unique classroom culture for each period.
Your comment should be on the post that people made regarding what they had learned about themselves, other cultures, or a friend in class. In a moment I will post the survey that you must also fill out before tomorrow’s class. This should only take a few moments. You will be required to enter you name, period, and names of those individuals that you posted comments to. Also, please check the blog later today for a preview as to what the introductory unit assessment is.
Enjoy your Sunday!!! Go outside and play!

Homework Due Friday the 3rd
Hello class,
I just wanted to congratulate everyone for the wonderful jobs they have done presenting the "Family Tree" projects. I have been very impressed with the courage that I have seen from each and every one of you. It is not easy to stand up in front of your peers and present information. But hopefully from this experience you have learned that it is not as bad as you may have originally thought.
I hope that everyone enjoys the holiday off tomorrow. That being said, we do have a homework assignment that needs to be completed by Friday the 3rd. I would like every student to make a blog post answering the following:
--> Tell us what you have learned from this process about either yourself / a classmate / or another culture. Many of you have had conversations with your parents while researching for this presentation, try to talk about either something you learned about your family history. You can also talk about something that you learned about another culture that is not yours. Lastly, if you have learned something interesting about someone from your class, and would like to talk about that, you may do so. This post needs to be two paragraphs in length. Remember there is NO EXCUSE for spelling errors as you can write a post in "Word" first, do a spell check, then post on your blog.
--> The next post is the study guide that I we began working on. Please post a bullet point list of what you think should be included on a study guide for what we have studied in class this year so far. We worked on this in groups for every period except for 1st. However, I expect every person to be able to post a list of topics / ideas / vocabulary that we have covered since the start of the year. This means that 1st period will also be responsible for this post, even though we did not work on it in class.
If you have any questions regarding the homework that is due for Friday, please email me: blake.stok@ais.edu.vn

Family Tree Project
Family Tree Project –
Your task is to share with me and the rest of the class, who you are and where you come from. You will do this by designing a short 5 minute presentation about your family history. Questions that you will ask yourself and answer in your presentation are:
o What is your History?
o Where does your family come from?
o Who is in your family?
o Examine your own culture
o Discuss your interactions with others unlike yourself
o Present as much information about your family background as possible – including but not limited to religious affiliation, culture, language(s), country of origin, education (how this may be different from people that don’t go to AIS – Why is this important?), any other information you think is of interest and value.
o You can present this information in any style or format that you think would best illustrate your background – examples of this include a powerpoint presentation, a family tree, food – if you are from a particular region or area that has a special dish (I encourage this!!!), style of dress / clothing, BE CREATIVE!!! Use your imagination when coming up with ideas of how to present this.

Create a Blog
For tonight's homework, each of you will create a blog that is specific to this class. I know that all of you have been instructed to create a blog for Mr. Patrick's class, so you should be familiar with the process. However, you are not allowed to use the same blog for both his class and mine. You will have to create one for my class that has a unique URL.
For those of you that have yet to complete the assignment for Mr. Patrick’s class, I will now walk you through the steps that you will need to follow in order to compete our homework. First you must go to the blogger site. You will click on the “create a blog” tab taking you to a window that requires you to sign up for a google account.
As most, if not all of you , have already created a google account, all you will have to do is go to blogger, sign in, and click on the “create a blog” button. If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to contact me via email, blake.stok@ais.edu.vn. Or another great option would be to contact your classmates that may have already completed this.
Once you have the blog up and running. Please go to our class blog, 8thgradesocialstudiesais.blogspot.com and click the “follow” button. This will allow me to view your blog and read what you have written. As your first blog entry, tell me something about yourself that you think I should know. This only needs to be one paragraph. This assignment is due on Friday, August 20th.
